activitystream_identicagroup is now packaged in activitystream_identica
HedgeMage — January 7, 2010 - 2:42pm
My activitystream_identicagroup module is included with activitystream_identica as a submodule. You may still want to use my view to dress it up a bit -- that will be contributed upstream when I have time.
If you previously downloaded and installed activitystream_identicagroup from my blog post, you should disable it and delete it from your modules directery before installing/upgrading to activitystream_identica version 1.1.
nice_identica_group view
HedgeMage — January 4, 2010 - 1:47pm
If you've tried activitystream_identicagroup module for Drupal, but still don't love the display, here's what I did for Frog and Owl:
I installed and enabled activitystream_identicagroup module, then edited one user's settings to add frogandowl group to their activitystream. Note please that the identica field (if enabled) and identica group field are totally different things -- identica group is toward the bottom of the form. Then, I created a view for what I thought was a nicer-looking identicagroup block.

Identi.ca Groups addon for Drupal's activitystream module
HedgeMage — January 3, 2010 - 11:46pm
Frog and Owl now has a group on Identi.ca, an open-source microblogging service (like twitter, but without a culture that thinks I want to know when people use the restroom). The activity stream module seemed to be a good way to get the Identi.ca stream on to frogandowl.org, but the activity stream identi.ca module only supported user streams, not groups. So, I tossed together a module to grab group feeds from identi.ca (a tarball is attached to this blog post for anyone who is interested).
Updates, modules, and insomnia, oh my!

Since I couldn't sleep anyway, I spent my evening applying much-needed upgrades to the Drupal install that powers BinaryRedneck.net. All appears to have gone smoothly; if you notice any oddities, please let me know.
Moving Hack: the moving book knows everything
HedgeMage — November 7, 2009 - 8:19pm
Well, it looks like moving is in my family's future again. As a former military spouse, I have some experience at this. Moving can be a pain. Moving with children can make one feel like one part Sherpa, one part zoo-keeper, and two parts air traffic controller. There are a few things I could not survive any move without: a Sanford King Size permanent marker, plenty of packing tape in a good, handled dispenser, and most importantly, my moving book.

...to the family and friends of the dead at Fort Hood, and to the injured and their loved ones.
Photographic woes and privacy myths.
HedgeMage — November 1, 2009 - 2:49pm
For the second time in the last few weeks, a loved one posted pictures of my son online without my permission. Neither person involved thought anything of it but that they love my son and wanted to share happy memories with their friends. Unfortunately, our culture has embraced technologies without understanding them, and there is *huge* social pressure not only to share intimate details of our lives online, but to think nothing of sharing others' info.
In other words, everyone assumes it's not a problem because everyone else assumes it's not a problem.
One item removed from my wish list

Bye, bye, Amazon Kindle.
I've been lusting after the Kindle DX for months now. I'd planned a purchase this fall as a birthday gift to myself, but no more. Amazon, a company whom I had generally trusted, has really disappointed me with this one.
- Publishers publish Kindle books.
- Kindle users buy ebooks.
- Publishers feel flip-floppy and decide to stop selling certain ebooks.
- Amazon reverses the sale of those ebooks, refunding the purchase price and deleting them from users' Kindles and account archives without any warning or explanation.
Now, are you ready for a killer dose of irony? The books were George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm.
BinaryRedneck.net is back
HedgeMage — July 11, 2009 - 11:21pm
After extended downtime for a server move that got interrupted by work and my crazy life, my blog is back up. It's still desperately in need of TLC, but that will have to wait for another day.

Jabber.binaryredneck.net Server Update
HedgeMage — June 26, 2009 - 1:01pm
Another set of jabber server fixes were applied today, including:
- A change to the new SSL certs. Clients (including gajim) that became unable to connect as of yesterday can now connect. Be sure to import the CAcert.org root certificate if you have not already done so. The change has also corrected a problem with some server-to-server connections.
- A configuration change that will hopefully put an end to the tendency for certain clients to randomly disconnect when idle.
As always, don't hesitate to contact me with any issues.
