Voter Registrar Training AAR

HedgeMage — April 21, 2008 - 6:36pm

Today, my mother and I attended voter registrar training at the local NEA headquarters. We can now register new voters anywhere in Illinois.

The training itself is interesting. We deputy registrars apparently exist only to promote voter registration and offload the work of checking proof of residence from election judeges on election day. Just getting people to want to register is valuable; however considering our state's record of massive voter registration fraud, I rather expected to have some authority in the area of dead pet registration prevention. In fact, the law of the land is "register everyone and let the office of elections sort it out" (after all, they have done such a great job so far). Voter registration in Illinois doesn't require the presentation of any govornment-issued ID or even any photo ID.

Taking this class with a room full of teachers, I was more than a little shocked when, after taking the oath to uphold the constitutions of the United States of America and the State of Illinois, someone raised their hand and offered that they had no idea what the Illinois constitution said. (This woman is a teacher in Illinois!) I didn't say anything about the constitution itself, even when the instructor blew her off with "it's along the same lines as the US constitution", mostly because my mom would have been terribly embarassed. Instead, I just pointed out that it was online and easily found by Google or her search engine of choice.

*Sigh*
